I recently found some Babybel Cheese in my fridge that had gotten hidden in the back and wondered how long it was good to eat. It was well easily left in there for over 6 months, and it was perfectly fine. But, In case you have never had a Babybel, it is a great miniaturized cheese produced by the Bel Group for adults and kids alike.

The cheese is packaged in a red wax shell, which is why it is often referred to as “red wax cheese.” Babybel cheese has a mild, slightly sweet flavor and a smooth texture.

According to the manufacturer’s guidelines, there will be a “best used by date” on the package, and although they recommend consuming prior to this date, how long does Babybel Cheese last past this date?

If kept in the fridge, Babybel cheese can last up to 6 months. Unrefrigerated, it should last up to a week. And best to keep it in a cool place if you do not have access to a fridge.

Why does Babybel Cheese Last Longer than regular cheeses?

Generally, wax-coated cheeses do not need to be refrigerated. The wax seals in moisture and prevents mold growth. And although it is sealed and contains no preservatives, helping it to last longer than regular cheeses, Babybell Cheese is not immune to going bad.

If you notice the texture of the cheese is too moist, that is a good sign it has gone bad. Also, the older will be a lot stronger than normal with white patches on the exterior of the product as well as orange spots on the inside.

What is the best way to store Babybel Cheese?

The best way to store Babybel cheese is to refrigerate it. Here are some tips to make Babybel Cheese last longer;

  • Store the cheese in a cool place and never place it near a heat source.
  • Make sure that your refrigerator is set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit (or below)

Note: It is not recommended to freeze the cheese, as it will affect the quality but it will last longer of course if you freeze it. If you do freeze it, it should last for up to six months. And yes, you can store it in the freezer even if opened. Generally, it will last 2-3 months without it going bad if it has been opened and then frozen.

If opened, how long does Babybel Cheese Last?

Generally, it is recommended to eat Babybel Cheese as soon as you peel the wax coating off. Leaving it to sit out for too long will dry out the cheese and it won’t taste as good. Once opened, any longer than 2-4 hours it will start to go bad.

But even if it is opened, and if you keep it in the fridge, it should last up to 2-3 weeks before it goes bad.

There you go, hope that helps answer your question. Let me know in the comments – what is the longest time a Babybel has lasted for you in the fridge without going bad?
